CHAPTER 6

Alden ignored me all through class. I opened my mouth to talk to him, just to close it about a hundred times, chickening out. As soon as the bell rang, he stood from his chair so fast that I barely saw the movement, and then he left without a single word. My heart wanted to break, but when was it ever whole to begin with?

I step into the massive library that I’ve only seen once before now. It’s like no library I’ve ever been in, and I feel like Belle from Beauty and the Beast just standing at its center. I laugh at myself for the thought. I really am a simple girl surrounded by magic and fairytale.

The room is shaped like a pentagon, with two stories. A staircase leads up to the second floor which is lined with books on each of the five walls, just like the first. A balcony wraps around the huge room, so that from the bottom floor, the second is clearly visible. Tall glass windows rise above where the third floor would be, bringing in rays of sunshine.

I pass along shelves of books that are labeled by genre. I remember seeing a Paranormal & Supernatural Beings aisle when I first visited this room, but I didn’t think much about it.

“Aha,” I say softly as I find what I was looking for.

I browse the shelves, finding more non-fiction than fiction books, which is exactly what I hoped for. I pull out everything I can see on demons, loading my arms high before heading to one of the empty tables at the center of the room.

I’m the only person in here, and it’s nice to not be watched for a moment. After being attacked by that krantus demon, my mind has been running wild. Then, hearing Gabe say that Alden is a demon too, I can’t not do my research. I open up the first book that gives a history of the tales of demons.
